YMCA Group Exercise Instructor, Thomas E. Hannah YMCA
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Wellness Director and Group Fitness Coordinator and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, Group Fitness Instructors are responsible for instructing safe, effective, and fun group exercise, as well as, enhancing the quality and growth of the program and retention of the participants of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg. Demonstrate in word and action the Y's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all matters at all times.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
- Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being.
- Responsible for teaching a minimum of 2 classes per week (8/month) including but not limited to at least one sub per month, and appropriately securing a substitute instructor when needed.
- Responsible to start and end class on time.
- Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
- Celebrates achievement of program participants related to the program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
- Keeps accurate class attendance records.
- Maintains nationally recognized certification(s) by keeping up with CEC's in the type of class teaching and provides verifiable proof of specialized skill/training such as Yoga, Pilates, Les Mills, Barre, Spin, Step, Kickboxing, Zumba, Cardio Dance, HIIT, Active Older Adults/Seniors, etc.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, ACSM, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
- High degree of energy and enthusiasm, be physically fit to have the endurance to complete the workout.
- At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
